This majestic volcano, standing at 3,726 meters (12,224 feet) above sea level, offers a unique and captivating experience that draws hikers and adventure seekers from around the world. It is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. Hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of lush forests, pristine crater lakes, and the surroundings. Camping on the slopes of Mount Rinjani or near the crater lake is also a unique experience. Hikers can sleep under the stars and wake up to stunning vistas. The adventure of hiking and camping in such an environment is a big draw. But Mount Rinjani is not just about the natural beauty; it's also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture. Many hikers encounter the indigenous Sasak people during their trek and have the chance to learn about their traditions and way of life.

While hiking to the summit of Mount Rinjani is a unique experience, it's not for everyone. Maybe you prefer to unveil another Lombok natural wonder that is less physically challenging, or perhaps you have been hiked to the top of Mount Rinjani on a previous occasion but coming back to the island to discover other stunning vistas. Don't worry, the town surrounding Mount Rinjani, Senara, keeps some Lombok jewels that are hard to miss for travelers coming to North Lombok.

1. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Two of the most famous and stunning waterfalls are located in the northern part of Lombok Island, Indonesia. They are part of the lush and picturesque Senaru region, which serves as a gateway to trekking adventures on Mount Rinjani.

Sendang Gile Waterfall

Sendang Gile is the first waterfall you encounter when trekking to the waterfalls, and it's relatively easier to reach compared to Tiu Kelep. The waterfall is known for its beautiful two-tiered cascade, and the name "Sendang Gile" is derived from the local Sasak language, meaning "crazy waterfall," which refers to its powerful and thundering flow. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery, and you can swim in the pool at its base, making it a refreshing spot to cool off after your hike.

To reach Sendang Gile, you can take a relatively short hike from Senaru village. The trail is well-marked and accessible, making it a popular destination for tourists and trekkers alike.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep is often considered the more adventurous of the two waterfalls, and it's located further upstream from Sendang Gile. This waterfall is larger and even more impressive, with a single curtain of water plunging into a deep pool. It's known for its mesmerizing blue color, which is a result of the mineral deposits in the water.

The hike to Tiu Kelep from Sendang Gile involves crossing a river several times and navigating through the forest. It can be challenging, especially during the rainy season when the river can swell, so it's recommended to have a local guide. Tiu Kelep is also considered a sacred place by the Sasak people, and there are cultural beliefs and traditions associated with it. Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of the site and the local customs.

2. Senaru Village

Senaru Village in Lombok, Indonesia, is a charming and culturally rich destination that serves as a gateway for trekkers heading to Mount Rinjani and the nearby waterfalls like Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. It offers a blend of cultural experiences, natural beauty, and adventure opportunities. It's an excellent place to immerse yourself in the authentic culture of Lombok while exploring the stunning natural attractions in the region.

While the village itself is relatively small, there are several attractions and activities you can enjoy in and around Senaru:

Sasak Culture: Senaru is inhabited by the Sasak people, who have a unique culture and way of life. The Sasak inhabitants are the cultural guardians of Mountain Rinjani and its surrounding forest and safeguard its spiritual values. You can learn about their traditions and customs, and perhaps even witness cultural ceremonies and rituals during your visit.

Traditional Sasak Houses: Take a stroll through the village to see the traditional Sasak houses (Karang Bajo), which are built using bamboo and thatched roofs. Some of these houses may offer a glimpse into local life.

3. Baun Pusuk Monkey Forest

The Baun Pusuk Monkey Forest, often simply referred to as the Pusuk Monkey Forest, is a natural attraction located in the northern part of Lombok Island, Indonesia. It is known for its lush rainforest setting and the presence of a large population of wild monkeys.

It is situated along the main road that runs through the northern part of Lombok, connecting the towns of Mataram and Bangsal. It's easily accessible and is often visited by travelers driving between these two points. To reach the Pusuk Monkey Forest, you can take a scenic drive along the winding road that passes through lush forests and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The road is also known as the "Monkey Forest Road."

The primary attraction of the forest is its population of wild monkeys, particularly long-tailed macaques. These monkeys have become accustomed to human presence and are known to approach visitors. They are quite photogenic and often come close to the road, making it easy for travelers to observe and interact with them. Many visitors stop along the road to feed the monkeys. However, it's important to exercise caution when doing so. Feeding the monkeys is a common activity, but it's recommended to feed them appropriate food like fruits, not processed or unhealthy snacks. Feeding them responsibly helps maintain their health and natural behaviors.

4. Malimbu Hill

Malimbu Hill is a picturesque viewpoint located in Lombok, Indonesia, on the northwest coast of the island. This hill offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Lombok Strait, the Gili Islands, Bali, and Mount Agung in Bali. It has become a popular spot for tourists and photographers, especially during sunset, when the scenery is particularly stunning. Malimbu Hill is situated in the West Lombok Regency, not far from the town of Senggigi. It's easily accessible by road and is a relatively short drive from Senggigi, making it a popular day-trip destination for tourists staying in that area.
