In utter darkness, underneath a sky of a thousand stars, the moon and flashlights show the way to the majestic crater of Mount Bromo. Upon arrival at the foot of the actual crater, there is a staircase leading to the summit. It does not take long for the sun to rise, but in that moment everything turns surreal. The emerging warm sun unveils a vast desolate landscape.

The 2,329 meter (7,641 ft) high mountain is a part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which is located in Eastern Java. The volcano is about 85km from the capital of East Java province, Surabaya and about 10 hours’ drive from Bali.

The National Park’s entry point is in Probolinggo, but most of the accommodation can be found in Cemoro Lawang, which is the closest town to the crater. There is a wide range of accommodations available, from simple homestays to luxurious hotels.

The landscape of mount Bromo, is defined by vast plains, surrounded by towering slopes and the absence of trees and vegetation. The scenery can best be described as “moon-like”.

On the foot of Mt.Bromo lies Pura Luhur Poten, a Hindu temple, which holds significant importance to the Tenggerese people, a tribe living in the hinterland region of Mount Bromo. While the majority of the population in Java is muslim, this tribe continues to practice ancient Hinduism.

The best place to see a panoramic view of Mount Bromo is from the Mount Penanjakan view point. Mount Penanjakan can best be reached by jeep in an hour or in three hours trekking. From up here you can see Mount Bromo laying in front of the highest mountain in Java, Mt. Semeru. The whole scenery creates a stunning view.

There are some places you just have to see in Indonesia, Mount Bromo, with its stunning scenery and beautiful sunrise is one not to be missed.
